Step 1: Answer questions directly to earn AI citations
Can AI answer engines lift a clear answer from your page?
Lead with the answer AI answer engines can lift
Answer engines tend to lift a short, self-contained passage rather than an entire page. If your business's real answer to "how much does X cost" or "how does Y work" is buried under three paragraphs of scene-setting, there's nothing clean for a model to cite.
Open each key section with a plain, direct answer to the question in its heading, ideally in the first 40-60 words, and only then add context, caveats or detail for the human reader who wants more.
Step 2: Use question-style headings AI search can read
Do your headings match how people ask AI?
Structure content the way people ask AI
Headings are how both readers and AI systems work out what a section covers before committing to reading it. Vague or clever headings ("Our Philosophy", "The Journey") give a model nothing to match against a real query. Question-style headings ("What is...", "How does...", "How much does...") map directly onto how people phrase questions to ChatGPT or Google.
Each section under a heading should also stand on its own. Answer engines frequently extract individual passages rather than whole pages, so a section that depends on the paragraph above it to make sense is a section that's harder to cite cleanly.
Step 3: Add schema markup so AI can trust your facts
Can AI read your key facts as structured data?
Turn key facts into data AI search engines can read
Schema markup (JSON-LD) gives AI systems explicit, structured facts about your content instead of making them infer everything from prose. It doesn't guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity for anything a model might otherwise misread.
The most useful types for most businesses are:
- Organization - your business name, logo and official details, kept identical everywhere they appear
- FAQPage - for genuine, on-page FAQ content, matched to the visible questions and answers
- HowTo - for genuine step-by-step guides, matched to the visible steps
- Article - for blog posts and guides, with author, publisher and publish date
Step 4: Keep facts consistent to protect your AI visibility
Does every source give AI the same story about you?
Give AI one confident version of your business
AI systems build a picture of your business from many places at once - your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, reviews. Where those sources disagree (different pricing, a different one-line description, an old address, an outdated team bio) a model has to guess which one is right, which erodes its confidence in citing you at all.
This is usually a case of an audit rather than a rewrite: most inconsistencies build up quietly over time as pages get updated individually rather than as a set.
Step 5: Earn genuine mentions to build AI visibility
Does the wider web vouch for you to AI?
Your AI visibility depends on the wider web too
AI models draw on the wider web's view of your business, not just what's on your own domain. Credible mentions in press coverage, industry directories, genuine reviews, and guest content on other reputable sites all contribute to whether a model treats you as an established, trustworthy answer rather than an unknown one.
This is the slowest step to move and the easiest to fake badly - mass-produced link building or paid, low-quality mentions tend to do little for genuine AI visibility, and can actively work against E-E-A-T signals. Genuine, relevant mentions from real, recognised sources are what compound over time.
Your AI search visibility checklist
If you only have an hour to improve your AI search visibility this week, work through these five checks in order:
- Does your top service page answer its own core question in the first 40-60 words?
- Are your headings written as real questions, not vague labels?
- Does your homepage and top service page have valid Organization and FAQPage schema?
- Do your website, Google Business Profile and LinkedIn all say the same thing?
- Is there one genuine, relevant external mention you could realistically earn this month?
